Chapter 7 Flashcards
What are the 2 types of improvement?
1) improvement as radical exploration
2) improvement as incremental exploitation
What’s the difference between strategic and operational focus?
- strategic - long-term, aggregated & abstract
- operational - short-term, local & specific
Explain the strategic improvement cycle.
Starting with intended market position –> direct –> operation’s resources & processes –> develop –> operation’s capabilities –> deploy –> market potential –> market choice –> intended market position
What is benchmarking?
learning from other organizations even from remote industries
What are the 2 roots that determine which improvements to prioritize?
1) market based root: order-winning objectives, qualifying objectives, less important objetives (in Competitive benefit Performance matrix)
2) resource-based root: better than competitors, same as competitors, worse than competitors
How do you combine the 2 roots?
Importance-performance matrix (excess, appropriate, improve, urgent)
What is the sandcone model?
defines in which sequence operations should be improved (quality, dependability, speed, flexibility, cost)
What are the 8 stages of process knowledge?
1) Complete ignorance - nowhere
2) Awareness - tacit knowledge
3) Measurement - written knowledge
4) Control of mean - written and in hardware
5) Process capability - hardware and operating manual
6) Process characterization - empirical equaion
7) Know why - scientific models
8) Complete knowledge
What are the 2 types of knowledge?
1) tacit knowledge - in people’s heards & behavior
2) explicite knowledge - definite form
How do you manage knowledge according to the nonaka and takeuchi knowledge model?
tacit knowledge -> Externalization -> explicit knowledge -> Combination -> explicit knowledge -> Internalization -> tacit knowledge -> Socialization -> tacit knowlege
