Chapter 7 Flashcards
What are the 3 stages of Memory?
- Encoding- info is coded
- Storage- info is placed in memory system
- Retrieval- stored memories are brought into consciousness
What is sensory memory?
Very brief but extensive memory for sensory events (information decays and is replaced)
What is short-term memory?
–Memory stage in which info is held in consciousness for 10 to 20 seconds
–7 items at a time
–Working memory – attention and conscious effort
What is long term memory?
–Has a very large capacity and the capability to store info relatively permanently
–Rehearsal and forgetting
Types of Long Term EXPLICIT Memory
–Facts or personal events that we are consciously aware of
–Semantic Memory – general knowledge
–Episodic Memory – Memory of one’s personal experiences
Declarative memory
Types of long term IMPLICIT memories
–Not consciously aware of
–Priming Memory – unconscious prior exposure to stimulus items may aid subsequent learning
–Procedural Memory – memory for making responses and performing skilled actions (riding a bike)
