PREJUDICE
negative preconception held against people within a certain group or social category.
DISCRIMINATION
unjust treatment of people due to their membership with a certain social category.
Types of discrimination?
direct discrimination-treated unfairly based on association with group
Indirect discrimination-a practice or rule applies to all people and unfairly disadvantages a group.
STIGMA
feeling of shame or disgrace experienced by an individual for a characteristic that differentiates them from others.
MENTAL WELLBEING
an individuals current psychological state, involving their ability to think, process information, and regulate emotions.
person experiencing optimal mental wellbeing:
make decisions, use logic, high levels of self-esteem, high levels of self-confidence and optimism, low levels of stress and anxiety
positive influences of mental wellbeing:
adequate nutrition and hydration, appropriate amounts of exercise, healthy functional relationships with family and friends.
negative influences of mental wellbeing:
dwelling on negative thoughts, substance abuse, conflict within friends and family
approaches to reduce prejudice, discrimination, and stigma
education, inter-group contact, social media, laws
