Chapter 6A - Earth and space Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Lithosphere
A
- Consists of the crust and topmost part of the mantle.
- Composed of minerals and rocks.
2
Q
What is a mineral?
A
- Solid inorganic substances.
- They are not manufactured, they exist naturally on Earth.
- Their atoms are organized in an EXTREMELY organized way.
3
Q
What are the three ways minerals can be classified?
A
- By color
- By transparency
- By hardness
4
Q
What is mineral color classification?
A
- Testing the streak to see if its color is idiochromatic (making them a mineral) or if it is allochromatic.
5
Q
What is idiochromatic and allochromatic?
A
- Idiochromatic means streak is the same color (pure)
- Allochromatic means streak is a different color (impure)
6
Q
What is mineral transparency classification?
A
- Transparent minerals allow light to pass through completely
- Translucent minerals allow light to partially pass through them
- Opaque minerals do not allow light to pass through them.
