An area of origin of grapes
Appellation
French. Meaning Controlled Place of Origin. The highest level a wine can get in the French Classification System. The designation applies to all wines made from grapes grown in that region if the wine is made according to all guidelines for that appellation, as outlined in the AOC laws.
Appellation d’Origine Controlee (AOC)
A champagne made from white grapes only
Blanc de blanc
A Champagne made from red grapes only
Blanc de noirs
The term used to describe a dry Champagne. Also used by Sparkling wine producers in other countries.
Brut
A french word for a walled-in vineyard. The term is often found in the names of Burgundy’s vineyards.
Clos
A french word literally meaning “growth,” often used to signify a rated, or high-quality vineyard.
Cru
A french word literally meaning “half-dry,” but used to describe a Champagne that is quite sweet.
Demi-Sec
A french word for “Sweet” used to designate the sweetest style of Champagne, which is rarely imported in to the United States.
Doux
Champagne to which no dosage or additional sugar is added before bottling
Extra brut
A confusing term used in Champagne to indicate a wine that is slightly sweet.
Extra Dry
A french term used to describe sweet wines, often used for dessert wines in the Loire Valley.
Moelleux
A french word meaning Sparkling. Used to describe sparkling wines made outside Champagne.
Mousseux
The middleman in wine production who purchases grapes from vineyard owners, and then makes and markets the wine.
Negociant
The french term that indicates that the entity that made a wine also owns the vineyard where the grapes were grown.
