What is a minority-majority?
All the minorities added together are greater than the majority
What group is the largest minority?
Hispanics
What is the Simpson-Mazzoli Act (1986)?
This says that employers have to document the citizenship of their workers
What is reapportionment?
This is modifying he House of Representatives in each state based off of population shifts
What is political socialization?
How you learn about politics. Formally, through education, and informally, through parents and friends
How does media play a part in political socialization?
- 18-25 use social media
- 65+ read newspaper, watch the news, television, radio
What’s another name for opinion polls?
Gallup polls
How are polls conducted?
- polls must have correct wording
- random sample (random digit dialing)
- large sample of people
- +/- 3% margin for error
What is an exit poll?
Ask every tenth person who they voted for. The downside is when results are released people don’t vote
What do polls tell us?
- politics follow rather than lead (top 3 issues)
- politicians use polls to craft their speeches
- polls can be worded so politicians get the answers they want
- American politics is uneducated and uninformed
- increased education does not mean increased level of politics
Why do Americans not value politics?
- narrowcasting
- distrust of the government
What are conservative political ideologies?
Republican, pro life, conservation, tax cuts, pro gun, pro death penalty, funding military, business, anti illegal immigrants
What are liberal political ideologies?
Democrat, pro choice, preservation, tax the rich, gun control, no death penalty, cut military funding, environment, help illegal immigrants
What are wealthy people more likely to be?
Conservative
What are people with less money more likely to be?
Liberal, because they benefit from gov programs
