Chapter 6 - Materials Flashcards
Define Stress
Force per unit cross-sectional area.
What is the elastic limit of a material?
The value of stress or force beyond which a material will no longer return to its original shape or size when the stress/force is removed.
What is ultimate tensile strength?
The maximum stress that a material can withstand before it breaks.
What is compressive deformation?
Change in shape due to multiple forces acting together to reduce the length/volume of an object.
What is young’s modulus?
Ratio of tensile stress to tensile strain. The greater the young’s modulus of a material the stiffer the material is.
What is plastic deformation?
An irreversible change in the shape of an object due to compressive or tensile force.
define strain
Extension per unit length.
What is tensile deformation?
Change in shape due to equal and opposite forces acting together to stretch an object.
What is limit of proportionality?
Value of stress or force beyond which the stress is no longer directly proportional to strain.
What is elastic deformation?
A reversible change in the shape of an object due to compressive or tensile force.
What is breaking strength?
The stress value at the point a material fractures.
