Chapter 24 - Particle Physics Flashcards
What is an isotope?
Nuclei of the same element that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
What is the strong nuclear force?
A very strong force with an incredibly short range that acts between all nucleons, holding the nucleus together
What happens when a particle and an anti-particle meet?
Annihilation
State the two families of subatomic particles
Quarks and leptons
What’s the difference between a hadron and a lepton?(2 things)
Hadrons are affected by the strong nuclear force, leptons are not.
Hadrons are made up of quarks, leptons are not
State the two types of hadron
Mesons and Baryons
What is a Meson made up of?
Three quarks
What is a Baryon made up of?
A quark and an anti-quark
What is a neutrino?
A particles with no charge and a incredibly tiny mass
What happens during a Beta minus decay?
A neutron turns into a proton, electron and an anti-neutrino
What happens during a Beta plus decay?
A proton turns into a neutron, positron and a neutrino
What is an antiparticle?
An antiparticle has the opposite charge but the same mass as the particles
What is pair production?
When a gamma ray turns into a particle and its corresponding antiparticle
What is the quark make up of a neutron?
