Chapter 22 - Electric Fields Flashcards
What is electric field strength?
The force experienced per unit charge within an electric field
What do the field lines on an electric field diagram show?
The arrows show the direction a positive charge would experience a force.
The field lines are always at a right angle to the surface of a conductor
The closer the lines are together the greater the field strength.
State Coulomb’s law
The electrostatic force between two objects is:
directly proportional to the product of their charges
and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them
What can a uniformly charged sphere be treated as?
A point charge
Define electric potential
The work done per unit charge in bringing a positive charge from infinity to that point
Define electric potential energy
The work done in bringing a positive charge from infinity to that point in an electric field
What is the electric potential at a point directly in between two equal and opposite charges?
0
What is the unit for electric field strength?
NC^-1
What is the electric potential at a point directly in between two equal and positive charges?
2 x the electric potential at that point in one of the fields
What is the electric field strength at a point directly in between two equal and positive charges?
0
What is the electric field strength at a point directly in between two equal and opposite charges?
2 x the electric field strength at that point in one of the fields
Is electric field strength a vector or a scalar?
Vector
Is electric potential a vector or a scalar?
Scalar
