Chapter 6 Learning Flashcards
Learning
Change in organism’s behavior or thought as a result of experience.
Habituation
Responding to a stimulus less strongly over time.
Sensitization
Responding to a stimulus more strongly over time.
Stimulus
Anything that can be perceived.
Response
Automatic reaction to stimulus.
Neutral stimulus (NS)
Does not elicit a particular response (sound of a bell).
Unconditioned stimulus (UCS)
Stimulus that automatically leads to a response (Food).
Unconditioned response (UCR)
Automatic response to an UCS (Salivation).
Conditioned stimulus (CS)
Previously neutral stimulus (sound of bell) that becomes associated with the UCS.
Conditioned response (CR)
Learned response to the CS (Salivation in response to bell).
Operant Conditioning
Procedure for studying how organisms learn about the consequences of their own voluntary actions.
Law of effect
If a response is followed by a satisfying consequence, it will be strengthened.
Reinforcement
Reinforcements are outcomes that increase the probability of a response.
Positive reinforcement
Giving a stimulus.
Negative reinforcement
Taking away a stimulus.
