chapter 6 integumentary Flashcards
cells types in epidermis
keratinoctyes, melanocytes, dendritic (langerhans) cells, tactile/merkle cells
keratinocytes
produce keratin, most cells of epidermis, tightly connected by desmosomes
melanoctyes
10-25% of cells in deepest epidermis, make melanin, protect from uv dmg.
dentritic cells (langerhans)
macrophages, activators of immune sys. help fight inflection in the epidermis
stratum basale
firmly attatched to dermis, single row of stem cells, melanoctyes compose a large chunk of this layer, has tactile and keratinocytes as well
stratum spinosum
prickly layer
stratum granulosum
cells flatten, keratinization begins, cells above this layer die, nuceli and organelles disinatgrate
stratum lucidum
only in thick skin translucent band
