Chapter 6- Electronic Structure in Relation To The Periodic Table Flashcards

1
Q

Alkali metals

A

1 electron on the outer shell
As you go down the group a shell is added
All alkali metals want to be stable so they add 1 to become isotopes
Potassium is the easiest to become stable as it is the furthest from the nucleus so it has the weakest attraction meaning that it easier to lose an electron
As you go down the group reactivity increases

Q

Halogens

A

+1 atom to become stable
As you go down the group reactivity decreases
Further down the group it is harder to gain an electron as the relation to the nucleus is weaker
