Democritus John Dalton Johann Wolfgang Dohbreiner John Newlands Dimitri Mendeleev
Who were the five men who contributed towards creating the periodic table?
What year did Democritus start his work on the periodic table?
Where was Democritus from?
What did Democritus work out?

Greek
Hypothesised the idea of an atom which is all that matter is made of.
What year did John Dalton work on the periodic table?
What did he do?
1803
Published the first list of elements, which were arranged in order of symbols, it consisted of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and sulphur.
What year did Johann Wolfgang Dohbreiner work on the periodic table?
What did he do?
1817
He arranged the elements in triads. Each triad consisted of elements with similar properties
What year did John Newlands work on the periodic table?
What did he contribute?
1864
He organised the elements in order of atomic mass when he did this he found out that each elements was similar to the one eight places on.
What year did Mendeleev work on the periodic table?
Where was he from?
What did he contribute?
1864
Russia
He organised the elements in order of atomic mass in groups (Columns) and periods (rows). The columns had elements of similar properties. He saw that there was gaps but instead of seeing it as a problem he just left gaps and was able to predict what the properties of the element that was yet to be discovered would have. The missing elements were eventually put in and had the properties he predicted.
