Cultural Assimilation: The process whereby a minority cultural group takes on the characteristics of the majority cultural group
Melting Pot: The idea that society should socialize diverse groups to blend into a common culture
Cultural Pluralism: Minor and Majority groups coexist
Bilingual/Multicultural Education: Disproportionately high numbers of diverse students enter school unprepared for academic work and do not finish school and disproportionately high numbers of those who do remain in school are achieving are below their potential
Schools and Disability; IDEA, inclusion
Disability: Reduction in the functioning of a particular body part or organ or its absence; Including them in educational activities that are available to all children
IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act): Provides federal money to states and local agencies to educate children with disabilities ages 3-21.
Inclusion: The educational philosophy that all children are entitled to participate fully in their school and community

Technology: The computer is an interactive tool tha can enhance learning in a variety of subjects:
Computers: Contribute to schooling for the future in that they can individualize instruction to accommodate different learning styles
Violence: Behaviors that intentionally threaten, attempt, or inflict harm on others; Safety: Government grants for health programs and safety
Substance Abuse: Remain major problems among middle schoolers and high schoolers with 8.9% of the population being 12 and up having used and illicit drug at the time of the government study
Effectiveness of School as socializing agent; Mesosystem influences
Mesosystem can empower families to share the responsibility for creating a safe school environment;
The school’s function as a socializing agent is it provides the intellectual and social experiences from which children develop the skills knowledge interests and attitudes that characterize them as individuals and that shape their abilities to perform adult roles
