Longer than wider
Shaft has 2 ends
Short bones
Cube shaped bones in carpals and tarsals.
Sesamoid
Short bones within tendons
Flat bones
Thin, flat, and curved
Sternum, ribs, and most skull bones.
Irregular bones
Complicated shapes
Vertebrae, mandible, maxilla, and hips.
Compact bones
Dense, smooth, solid outer layer
Resistant to bending.
Spongy bone
Internal to compact bone.
Contains open spaces filled with yellow or red bone marrow.
Ossification
When cartilage turns to bone
Fracture
Break in the bone
Osteoporosis
Reabsorption outpaces bone deposit.
Bone mass decreases, becomes more porous.
