Chapter 6 Bones Flashcards
What are the bone cells?
Osteocyte, Osteoblast, Osteogenic, Osteoclast
What is purpose of osteogenic cells?
To make bone (stem cells)
What is the purpose of osteoblast?
Builds bone (storage of calcium)
What is the purpose of osteocytes?
Maintain the bone tissue (cells)
What is the purpose of osteoclast?
Breaks down bone
What is intramembranus ossificaiton?
Osteoblast will become osteocyte to form bones as well as veins
What is endochondral ossification?
Form the primary ossification center in the middle of the bone
What happens when calcium levels are low in the body?
Osteoclast activates to break down bone while osteoblast get deactivated. Calcium doesn’t get secreted into urine to keep all calcium inside the body
What happens when calcium levels are too high in the body?
Osteoblast activates to build bones while osteoclast deactivated to not break down bones. Calcium will get filtered out of urine. Digestion doesn’t reabsorb calcium
What is the normal calcium level in the body?
10mg/dL
What is secreted when calcium levels are too low?
The parathyroid gland releases PTH
What is secreted when calcium in too high?
The thyroid gland secretes calcitonin
