has to be fitted
Cervical cap
similar to a diaphragm except smaller Used with spermicide Can stay in place for 48 hours barrier fits over cervix
Contraceptive sponge

unlike cervical cap or diaphragm, no fitting by doctor is required
thrown away when woman is done
Oral contraceptives-pill
A daily pill that is taken in a 4 week cycle
Prevents release of egg, makes cervical mucous thicker, and uterine lining thinner.
have to take pill everyday at same time
Nuvaring-ring
A small plastic ring that fits in the vagina next to the cervix
It is worn for 3 weeks and contains estrogen and progesterone, much like the pill.
Birth control patch
A small thin patch worn in a 4-week cycle.
Works similar to birth control pills. releases estrogen and progestin
Releases hormones through the skin into the bloodstream.
Need to keep track of patch change day.
Depo prevera-shot
An artificial hormone given as a shot once every 3 months.
Only have to worry about birth control 4 times a year.
Implanon – the Implant
The birth control implant (Implanon) is a matchstick-sized rod that is placed under the skin of the upper arm.
It releases the same hormone that’s in the birth control shot, but the implant protects against pregnancy for 3 years.
IUD (Intrauterine Device)
A small plastic device placed inside the uterus.
Most release copper or hormones to increase effectiveness. Prevent fertilization
reamians effective for 5 years
long acting reversible contraception
TUBAL IMPLANTS
A newer procedure makes it possible to block the fallopian tubes without surgery.
Small implants of metal or silicone are placed inside each tube. Scar tissue eventually grows around the implants and blocks the tubes.
