Chapter 6 (Adaptation for survival) Flashcards
Name three methods plants and animals use to protect themselves from predators.
~ Mimicry
~ Colour
~ Camouflage
What is the basic principle of camouflage?
An animal is difficult to distinguish from its surroundings.
List the five ways the colour method works.
~ They have the same colour as their surroundings.
~ They can have colour patterns.

Yes
Is water a restricting factor? Why?
Yes, too much water will drown plant. Too little water will dry plant out.
What are the three main groups of plants?
~ Hydrophytes
~ Xerophytes
~ Mesophytes
What are Hydrophytes?
Plants that live in or near water.
What are Xerophytes?
Plants that survive on very little.
What are the three types of Xerophytes?
~ Succulents
~ Non-succulents
~ Drought-escaping
What are succulents?
Plants that overcome the shortage of water by storing it in their leaves, roots or stems.
What is a Non-succulent?
Plants that don’t store water, but adapted to lose as little water as possible.
What are Drought-escaping plants.
Plants that overcome the dry season in the form of seeds.
What is a Mesophyte?
Plants that live in moderate regions.
