Chapter 6 Flashcards
Measurement
The process by which we describe and ascribe meaning to the key facts concepts or other phenomena that we are investigating
Constructs
Are not observable either directly or indirectly but they can be define based on observables
Concept
Is that notion or image that we conjure up when we think of some cluster Or related observations or ideas
Conceptualization
It’s a process that involves coming up with clear concise definitions
Operationalization
Involves spelling out precisely how a concept will be measured
Indicators
Like clues ideas what you are like social roles
Measurement process
Generally involves going from a more general focus to a Narrower one, But the process does not proceed in exactly the same way for all research projects
Reliability
Is a matter of consistency
Validity
Is a matter of social agreement. Quick and easy way to insure that your measures are valid is to discuss them with others
Nominal
Variable attributes meet the criteria of exhaustiveness and mutual exclusivity basic level of measurement.
Ordinal
Can be ranked ordered though we cannot calculate a mathematical distance between those attributes
Interval
Measures meet all the criteria of the two proceeding levels Plus the distance between attributes Is know to be equal
Ratio level
Attributes are mutually exclusive and exhaustive, Attributes can be ranked ordered, the distance between attributes is equal, and attributes have a true zero point
Index
A type of measure that contains several indicators and is used to summarize some more general concept
Typologies
A way of categorizing concepts according to particular themes
Index abs typologies Allow us to account for and simply some of the complexities in Our measures
