Chapter 6 Flashcards
Percentile
The score at or below which a specified percentage of all scores in the distribution fall.
Percentile rank
The percentage of scores equal to or less than the given score.
Standard score or z score
A variable whose value counts the number of standard deviations a score above or below the mean.
For example, z = 0 (denotes the mean itself); z=1 is one standard deviation above the mean; z=2 is two standard deviations above the mean; z= -1 is one standard deviation below the mean
Score
The value of any variable.
Raw score
A value of the variable in the original scale of measurement.
What tells you the position of a point within its distribution?
Percentiles, percentile ranks and standard scores.
What is often the most useful information in frequency distributions?
The areas under portions of the curve.
Relative area
The proportional (or fractional) area under a frequency distribution.
Normal distribution
Any of a family of symmetric, unimodal, asymptotic, distributions obtained by specifying values of the mean of the population and the standard deviation of the population.
Unit normal distribution
A normal distribution with mean of the population =0 and standard deviation =1.
What are the percentages under the normal curve?
34%, 14%, 2%
Interpolation
Finding a value located proportionately between two values on a table.
Standardized variable
A normally distributed variable that has the mean of the population and standard deviation for the population.
