Chapter 10 - Evaluating Hypotheses About Means Flashcards
How can the hypotheses about means of single samples be classified?
According to whether or not the population standard deviation is known.
Finish this sentence - if the observed value of the sample statistic exceeds (is more extreme than) the critical value of the sample statistic…
we reject the null hypothesis.
Finish this sentence - if the observed value of the test statistic exceeds (is more extreme than) the critical value of the sample statistic…
we reject the null hypothesis.
Finish this sentence -if we reject the null hypothesis…
we will support the alternative hypothesis and consider practical significance.
What is an experiment designed to test?
Whether we should reject the null hypothesis? We assume that the null hypothesis is true and then test to see whether that assumption is reasonable.
What is the critical value of the statistic?
A criterion set in advance; the beginning of a rejection region. If the observed value of the statistic lies in the rejection region, we reject the null hypothesis.
What is the observed value of the statistic?
A computed statistic of our sample.
What is the rejection region?
The portion of the distribution of the statistic (or test statistic) that lies beyond the critical value(s). If the observed value of the statistic (or test statistic) lies in the rejection region, we reject the null hypothesis.
What is the observed value of the test statistic?
The value of the test statistic computed from our sample.
What is the critical value of the test statistic?
A criterion set in advance. If the observed value of the test statistic is greater (in absolute value) than the critical value, we reject the null hypothesis.
