Chapter 6 Flashcards
What is skin made up of?
Epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous
What is the epidermis?
The outer layer of epithelial tissues such as stratified squamous
What is the dermis?
It is the second innermost layer that is thicker and is made of connective tissue’s, collagen fibers, and elastic fibers
What is the subcutaneous layer?
It is the layer under the dermis, used for insulating, is made of oriole are in adipose tissue and has blood vessels that supply the skin with nutrients
What are the characteristics of melanin
Melanin is a pigment that is produced by melanocytes found in the stratum basale
What does melanin do?
It absorbs UV light in the keratinocytes to protect cells from the UV rays
What are the five layers of the epidermis
Stratum corneum, Stratham lucidum, Stratham granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum Basale
What is the thick layer of epidermis that is only found in the palms of your hands in the soles of your feet?
Stratum lucidum
What is the outermost layer of the epidermis? What is the innermost layer of the epidermis?
Stratum corneum, Stratum basale
What are the functions of the skin?
Protection, prevents water loss, has sensory receptors, excrete waste, produces vitamin D, regulates body temperature
What is found in the subcutaneous layer?
MAJOR blood vessels
Where are accessory structures found?
Originate from the epidermis and extend into the dermis/hypodermis
What are the three accessory structures?
Hair follicles, nails, skin Glands (sabaceous/sweat)
What is the attractor pili?
The muscle that attaches to the hair and causes goosebumps
What are the three types of burns?
Superficial(1st), deep(2nd), full thickness(3rd)
