Office-based pre- participation physical exam
A complete health screening done by the athletes family physician
Pre-participation physical exam
A comprehensive assessment of an athletes overall health and ability to perform a sport at the highest level.
Station based pre-participation physical exam
Screening of the athlete by several different specialist who are responsible for specific aspect of screening, such as the medical history; weight, and vital signs
Medical history
Cornerstone of any medical examination. A complete history will identify approximately 75% of problems affecting the athlete
Contact/collision sport
Contact or collision sport put athletes at a high risk for traumatic injury involving force.
Basketball, football, water polo, etc
Limited contact sport
Put the athletes at some risk of traumatic injury
Baseball, cheerleading, gymnastic, etc
Non-contact sport
An athlete has a very low risk of traumatic injury due to force.
Dance, golf, running, etc
Clearance
Permission granted by a physician, based on athletes physical examination, to participate in a sporting event
Unrestricted clearance
Clearance after completion of further evaluation or rehabilitation
No clearance for any sports
