Essay item

Short - Answer Items
examinee supplies a word, phrase, number, or symbol response to direct question. or in COMPLETE SENTENCE.
- Structure so item response is as short as possible.
- only one correct answer
- direct question format over incomplete sentence format.
- incomplete sentence use only one blank space near the end of sentence.
- make sure blank provide adequate space for response.
- indicate the degree of precision expected.

Matching Items
Contains two columns
- each statement includes one idea.
- avoid using specific determiners and qualifiers that can serve as cues.
- true and false approx same length and equal amount of both t/f.
True and False Items
AKA Binary Items
- avoid including more than one idea in statement.
- avoid specific determiners and qualifiers that might serve as cues
- ensure that true and false statments are approx same length.
- same amount questions for both t/f.
Multiple Choice Item
“Most popular test question form”
- Are items clear and easy to read
- does item clearly state problem or question
- are there between 3 and 5 alternatives
- are alternatives brief and promote sufficient scanning
- avoid negative stated stems
- only one alternative that is correct or rep best answer
- alternatives gramatically correct and relative to stem.
- minimize use of “non of the above” and “all of the above”
- limit use of “ always” and “never”
Likert Items
Degree of agreement. Assess attitudes. Ordinal rating scales.
Matching items
include more responses than questions.
limit matching to homogenous material. EX: all questions about brain structure.
