Chapter 6 Flashcards
What is a refracting telescope?
It uses a lens to concentrate light at a focal point (bends light).
What is a reflecting telescope?
It uses a curbed mirror to concentrate light at a focal point.
What is chromatic aberration?
When the lens focuses different wavelengths of light at different points. (refractors)
What is the main function of a telescope?
To collect light and focus it.
What is the telescope area?
A = piD^2 / 4
What is angular resolution?
The smaller an angle between two object that can be separated, the better the resolution of the telescope.
What is the angular resolution formula?
alpha ~ wavelength/D
What telescopes are better?
Larger ones (with smaller angles)
What is telescope magnification?
magnification = focal of objective lens/ focal of eyepiece (long focal of eyepiece = small image)
What is atmospheric blurring?
Due to movements of air pockets (seeing)
