Chapter 26,27: Galaxies Flashcards
What kind of galaxies are there?
Elliptical, Normal Spiral, Barred Spiral, and Irregular/Peculiar
What are spiral galaxies?
Sa = smooth, broad spiral arms and largest central bulge
Sc = narrow, well-defined arms and smallest central bulge
What are barred spiral galaxies?
SBa = smoothest spiral arms and largest central bulge
SBc = narrow, well-defined arms and smallest central bulge (milky way)
What is an elliptical galaxy?
little rotation, no gas, reddish colors.
What are irregular galaxies?
small and large Magellanic clouds.
What are active galaxies?
non-stellar radiation (most light does not come from stars). unusual because luminosity is dominated by activity in and around the center.
What are Quasars?
Supermassive black hole with a disk (need a spectrum to tell them apart)
