Chapter 6 Flashcards
What is kinetic energy?
The energy of motion.
What is potential energy?
The stored energy whose capacity to accomplish work is not being used at the moment
What is chemical energy?
The energy associated with the interaction of atoms in a molecule
What is mechanical energy?
The energy by a object as the result of its motion or position; a type of kinetic energy
What is free energy?
(Delta G) the amount of energy left to do work after a chemical reaction has occurred.
What does it mean with free energy is negative? (negative delta G)
The products have less free energy than the reactants causing the reaction to occur spontaneously. The reaction occurs without additional input of energy
What is an exergonic reactions?
Spontaneous reactions that release energy
What is an endergonic reaction?
Reactions that require an input of energy to occur.
What are the factors to change of enzymatic rate?
change in pH, temperature and inhibitors
What is the overall equation for photosynthesis?
Solar energy + Carbon dioxide +water -> glucose + water
solar energy + 6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6H2O
In the photosynthesis reaction, what is being reduced and what is being oxidized? What is its resulting products?
CO2 is being reduced. H2O is being oxidized. Its resulting products are C6H12O6 and O2.
What is the equation of cellular respiration?
Glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + energy (ATP)
C6H12C6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + H2O + ATP
What can change the shape of an enzyme active site?
Temperature, inhibitor, pH
