Chapter 6 Flashcards
Mendeleev
Created the first periodic table
Periodic Law
When elements were arranged in order of increasing atomic number they will have similar physical and chemical properties.
Metals (in case you forgot)
Shiny, conductive, malleable, ductile and solid at room temp.
Nonmetals
Mainly liquid or gas at room temp
Brittle when solid
Poor conductors
Metalloids
Have both metal and nonmetal properties.
Alkalai Metals
Group 1A on the periodic table (far left vertical line)
Alkalaine Earth Metals
Group 2A on the periodic table
Halogens
Group 7A (forms salts)
Noble gasses
Group 8A (Rarely react chemically)
Representative Elements
Group 1A-7A (The highest S and P sub-levels are not completely filled.)
Transition Metals
Elements with electrons in the D sublevel
Inner Transition Metals
Elements with electrons in the F sub-levels
Atomic Radius
The distance between the nuclei of two atoms of the same element when they are joined.
Ions
Charged atoms
Cation
Positively charged atoms (Usually metals)
