Chapter 5 Flashcards
Energy Level
Fixed rings around atoms that carry a specific amount of electrons
Quantum
The amount of energy required to move an electron one energy level.
Quantum Mechanical Model
A way to predict how and where electrons will move
Quantum equation
2(n)²
n= energy level
Atomic Orbital
A region of space with a high chance of finding an electron
Atomic Sublevels
S- Spherical shaped only 1 for every energy level
P- Dumbbell shaped 3 different kinds on each axis
D- Clover-shaped 5 kinds along the x,y, and z-axis
F- No describable shape 7 kinds
Electron Configurations
They way that electrons are arranged into orbitals in an atom
Aufbau Principle
Electrons occupy the orbitals of lowest energy first.
Pauli´s Exclusion Principle
States that an atomic orbital may hold a maximum of 2 electrons. To have 2 they must have opposing spins.
Hund´s Rule
States that electrons will fill a sublevel and spin in the same direction.
Crest
High point of a wave
Trough
Low point of a wave
Amplitude
The height between the base of a wave and its high/low point
Wavelength
Distance between the same point on two consecutive waves.
Frequency
Number of waves produced over a certain amount of time
