Chapter 5.2 Flashcards
Binary fission
Organism divides into 2 equal pieces
Asexual reproduction
Only needs 1 parent
Offspring is identical to the parent (=clone)
Budding
Multicellular organism
Offspring begins as a small growth on the side
Fragmentation
Some animals and many plants
A part accidentally breaks off and develops into new organism
Vegetative Reproduction
Grow from roots, stems or runners from the parent PLANT
Grafting
Plant with roots called “rootstock” have a new stem (scion) attached
Scion
Stem of a plant grafted on to the roots of another plant
Human-assisted Cloning
Various techniques developed by science to clone complex plants or animals
Reproductive cloning
= adult DNA cloning
Putting the nucleus from an adult cell into an egg cell to create a new organism
Stem cells
Can become many different kinds of cells
Embryonic stem cells
Can become any cell in the body
