Chapter 5.1 Flashcards
Interphase
Longest stage
Cells perform their function
Most things in the cytoplasm doubles
Cell Cycle
Life of a cell divided into 3 stages
3 stages = interphase, mitosis and cytokinesis
Mitosis
Shortest stage
Duplicated Nucleus divides into equal parts
Cytokinesis
Separates the 2 nuclei and cell contents into 2 daughter cells
Replication
DNA unwinds and makes a new copy of each half
Sister chromatids
Matching copies of duplicated chromosomes
Centromere
Holds sister chromatids together
Early prophase
Nucleolus disappears
Spindle fibres appear
Late prophase
Spindle fibres attach to centromeres
Nuclear membrane disappears
Centrioles
ANIMALS ONLY
Organize spindle fibres
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up in the MIDDLE of the cell
Telophase
Chromosomes go to opposite ends
Spindle fibres disappear
Nuclear membrane starts around each set of chromosomes
Each nucleus gets a Nucleolus
Anaphase
Sister chromatids separate and move apart
Cancer
Uncontrolled cell division
