Chapter 50 Nursing Management: Endocrine Problems VOCAB Flashcards
Acromegaly
a condition caused by excessive secretion of growth hormone characterized by an overgrowth of the bones and soft tissues.
Addison’s disease
all three classes of adrenal corticosteroids (glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and androgens) are reduced.
Cushing syndrome
a condition caused by excessive secretion of growth hormone characterized by an overgrowth of the bones and soft tissues.
Diabetes insipidus (DI)
a group of conditions associated with deficient production or secretion of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), or a decreased renal response to ADH caused by injury of the neurohypophyseal system.
Exophthalmos
protrusion of the eyeballs from the orbits caused by increased fat deposits and fluid in the retroorbital tissues.
Goiter
enlargement of the thyroid gland that may be associated with hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, or normal thyroid function.
Graves’ disease
autoimmune disease of unknown etiology characterized by diffuse thyroid enlargement and excessive thyroid hormone secretion
Hyperaldosteronism
excessive aldosterone secretion caused by an adenoma of the adrenal zona glomerulosa or bilateral adrenal hyper¬plasia
Hyperparathyroidism
a condition involving increased secretion of parathyroid hormone resulting in increased serum calcium levels.
Hyperthyroidism
a clinical syndrome in which there is a sustained increase in the synthesis and release of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland
Hypoparathyroidism
a condition of insufficient secretion of the parathyroid glands.
Hypopituitarism
a rare disorder that involves a decrease in one or more of the pituitary hormones and marked by excessive deposits of fat and persistence or acquisition of adolescent characteristics.
Hypothyroidism
insufficient circulation of thyroid hormones resulting in a hypometabolic state.
Myxedema
the progression of the mental sluggishness, drowsiness, and lethargy of hypothyroidism to a notable impairment of consciousness or coma that is a medical emergency.
Pheochromocytoma
a rare condition characterized by a tumor of the adrenal medulla that produces excessive catecholamines causing persistent or intermittent hypertension.
