Chapter 5 Vocab Flashcards
divided into six major regions: Pectoral girdles (4 bones) - Left and right clavicle (2) and scapula (2). Arms and forearms (6 bones) - Left and right humerus (2) (arm), ulna (2) and radius (2) (forearm).
Appendicular skeleton
Continuous, slightly moveable joint
Amphiartrthrosis
The cartilage covering the articular surfaces of the bones forming a synovial joint
Articular cartilage
Location where bones connect.
Joint
Articulations
The axial skeleton is the part of the skeleton that consists of the bones of the head and trunk of a vertebrate
Axial skeleton
Skeletal part of the chest
Bony thorax
Joints Connected entirely by cartilage
Cartilaginous joints
mostly made up of yellow marrow, o, or fat cells. There isnt enough room for things to pass through here
Compact bone
Shaft or central part of a long bone
Diaphysis
Enclosing structure around the pelvis providing atrachments for the hind limbs and pelvic fins
Pelvic girdle
a dense layer of vascular connective tissue enveloping the bones except at the surfaces of the joints.
Periosteum
bone marrow in which the fat cells predominate in the meshes of the reticular network
Yellow marrow
contain the developmental stages of red blood cells, white blood cells, and megakaryocytes.
Red marrow
wide as they are long. function is to provide support and stability with little to no movement.
Short bones
connects the upper limb to the axial skeleton on each side. It consists of the clavicle and scapula
Shoulder girdle
Framework of bone enclosing the brain
Skull
Freely movable
Diarthroses
Hyaline plate found at each end of a long bone where growing occures
Epiphyseal plates
Rounded end of a long bone
Epiphysis
connected by dense connective tissue, consisting mainly of collagen. In these joints the bones are firmly interlocked by irregular edges. Cannot move.
Fibrous joints
made up of a layer of spongy bone between two thin layers of compact bone. Their shape is flattened, not rounded. Examples include the skull and ribs. Flat bones have marrow, but not a bone marrow cavity.
Flat bones
allow slight movement of the vertebrae, and acts as a ligament to hold the vertebrae together. Work as shock absorbers in the spine
Intervertebral disc
Dont belong to a certain bone shape group
Irregular bones
a short band of tough, flexible, fibrous connective tissue that connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint.
Ligament
Has a shaft and two ends and is longer than wider
Long bone
It is very porous and typically contains a lot of red bone marrow, Red marrow tends to be very flexible, and it’s responsible for producing and carrying red blood cells
Spongy bone
f joint which permits very little or no movement under normal conditions. Most synarthroses joints are fibrous.
Synarthroses
also known as diarthrosis, is the most common and most movable type of joint in the body
Synovial joint
the backbone or spine, is a bony skeletal structure found in vertebrates. It is formed from individual bones called vertebrae which houses the spinal canal, a cavity that encloses and protects the spinal cord
Vertebral column
