A firm allegiance to a political party that is the basis for government action
Partisanship
A group of people who try to control government by winning elections and holding public office.
Political party
The party that controls the executive branch–the presidency at the national level or the governorship at the state level
Party in power
Ta political system which only candidates of two political parties have a good chance of winning
Two party system
The largest number of votes cast for an office in an election
Plurality
Including members of both political parties
Bipartisan
A general agreement among factions
Consensus
A combination of groups with different interests who take action to reach mutual goals
Coalition
The current office holder
Incumbent
A dissenting group
Faction
All of the people entitled to vote in an election
Electorate
Political party based on a set of social, economic, and political beleifs
Idealogical parties
A political party that splits fron one of the major parties, typically supporting a political leader who did not receive the major party’s nomination
Splinter parties
A local unit of party organization, often used for city council elections
Ward
A local voting district
Precint
