Chapter 5 Tissues Flashcards
Four major tissue types
epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
Epithelial Tissue
covers organs and the body
lines body cavities
lines hollow organs
have a free surface
have a basement membrane
avascular
cells readily divide
cells tightly packed
cells often have desmosomes (associated with sensation)
function in protection, secretion, absorption, and excretion
classified according to cell shape and number of cell layers
Simple Squamous ET
single layer of flat cells substances pass through easily line air sacks line blood vessels line lymphatic vessels
Simple Cuboidal ET
single layer of cube-shaped cells
line kidney tubules
cover ovaries
line ducts of some glands
Simple Columnar ET
Single layer of elongated cells
cilia aid in moving eggs through uterine tubes
line uterus, stomach, intestines
Pseudostratified Columnar ET
single layer of elongated cells appear striated (look like they have several layers) often have cilia often have goblet cells lines respiratory passageways
Stratified Squamous ET
many cell layers top cells are flat can accumulate keratin (protein) outer layer of skin line oral cavity, throat, vagina, and anal canal
Stratified Cuboidal ET
2-3 layers
cube-shaped cells
line ducts of mammary glands, sweat glands, salivary glands, and the pancreas (all things that secrete)
Stratified Columnar ET
top layer of elongated cells
cube-shaped cells in deeper layers
line vas deferens, male urethra (helps drain urine), and part of pharynx
Transitional ET
many cell layers
specialized to change in response to increased tension
line urinary bladder, ureters, and part of the urethra
Glandular Epithelium
composed of cells that are specialized to produce and secrete substances
Endocrine Glands
are ductless
secretes their products into tissue fluid or blood (inside the body)
Exocrine Glands
have ducts
secretes their products into ducts that open onto a surface (outside the body)
Merocrine Glands
secrete: fluid product salivary glands pancreas sweat glands
Apocrine Glands
secrete:cellular product
portions of cells
mammary glands
ceruminous glands
