What are the 2 types of timber finishes?
- Rough sawn :has not been planes so rough to touch
- Plan all round ( PAR): Smooth finish, varnish or paint can be applied
What is seasoning?
- Once timber has been converted into a workable form it’s seasoned to reduce moisture content
- Air drying + kiln are 2 methods of seasoning
- Kiln drying kills bacteria
What are the 2 main processes used to make manufactured boards?
- Lamination
- Compression
What Is veneer?
Some manufactured boards are covered in a thin slice of natural timber called veneer. They are taken from a trunk of a trees d are bonded to the surface of a cheaper material
What are the advantages of using manufactured boards?
- Smooth finish which require very little preparation
- Makes use of low grade, recycled material
- Available in large sheets
- No knots or resin pockets
What are the disadvantages of using manufactured boards?
- Tools can be blunt easily
- Edges can be hard to finish
- Most boards are prone to absorb moisture if not treated
