Chapter 5 The Skeletal System Flashcards
3 functions of the skeletal system
1 supports the shape and posture of the body.
2 protects soft organs
3 moves skeletal muscles
4 stores minerals and fat
5 blood cell formation, hematopoietic, to make blood
Name the four main classifications of bone, give an example of each
1 Long bones that have longitudinal axes and expanded ends. Like the forearm and thigh bones.
2 short bones are somewhat cubelike, lengths and widths =. Like wrists and ankles
3 flat bones and platelike structures with broad surfaces. Like ribs, scapulae, some bones of skull.
4 irregular bones have a variety of shapes connected to several other bones. Like vertebrae and facial bones.
Identify the major anatomical areas of a long bone
Spongy, compact, articulate cartilage.
Enldosteum, yellow marrow, compact bone, periosteum, perforating fibers, nutrient arteries.
Proximal epiphysis, diaphysis, distal epiphysis
Describe cartilaginous joints.
Bones connected by cartilage.
Pubic symphysis- allows movement during child birth.
Intervertebral joints- allows movement of the spine.
Describe fibrous joints
Bones united by fibrous tissue.
Sutures in the skull, immovable, syndesmoses that allows more movement than sutures. Example: distal end of tibia and fibula
Describe synovial joints
Articular cartilage(hyaline) covers the ends of bones Joint surfaces are enclosed by a fibrous articulate capsule
