Makes us deal with formal rules. Manifest function: (visible) to teach us academic skills. Latent function: (hidden) to socialize us to understand how to co-operate.
School
Influenced by them to some extent. (Good and bad) Influence short term interests such as music.
Peers
“Nurture” factor that influences our behaviour. Represents and unrealistic view of life.
Media
Intended to dupe out the results of prior socialization. May be the gov’t or a cult.
Total institution
Primary socialization
Describes the process of learning language, eating, emotions, etc. the basic understandings needed to function in society.
Learning how to function in groups, and how to follow the behaviours society expects of us.
Secondary socialization
The ability we develop to think ahead and act accordingly. ie: what to wear to a party.
Anticipatory socialization
The deliberate attempt by society to replace certain aspects of someone’s socialization with new learnings. ie: prisons
Resocialization
Most important agent. Responsible for shaping individuals’ selves and personality. From it we learn language, communication skills, etc.

Briefly explain Psychosexual Theory:

Founded by Sigmund Freud, who believed that babies are born with the impulse to seek pleasure (id). He believed that each stage must be completed. 1 oral - baby 2 anal- toddler 3 phallic- 3-6 yrs 4 latency- 6-puberty 5 genital- adolescence
Briefly explain Cognitive Theory:

Founded by Jean Piaget, he observed that children go through a series of developmental stages. Babies are born incapable.
1 sensorimotor- learn by touching, egocentric
2 pre-operational- understanding symbols
3 concrete operational- have logic, understand principles of measurement
4 formal operation- can think abstractly
