Chapter 5: Sensation and Perception Flashcards
Gestalt Principle
Form or pattern
Figure Ground Relationship
We notice a figure and everything else is the background. Sometimes the figure becomes the background and they switch (is it an a young lady or an old crone picture)
Proximity
Things that are close together tend to be grouped together
Similarity
Things that are alike tend to be grouped together (think of a football teams matching colors, and how you group them together as teams)
Continuity
We perceive smoother lines easier than jagged lines (a road is straight and it’s easier to drive on than a jagged road)
Principle of closure
We tend to connect things that hae small gaps to create a whole, closed structure. Think of the square that had some gaps in it. But you still see a square.
Bottom-Up processing
You don’t have the puzzle box. You’re starting from scratch with little information.
Top-Down
you have the puzzle box and recognize what you see. Takes less effort to understand (perceive)
