Chapter 4: States of Consciousness Flashcards
Beta Waves
While Awake
High Frequency
Lowest Amplitude
Frequency Waves
How many brains waves occur in a second
Amplitude Waves
Height of the brain wave
REM
Rapid Eye Movement. Beta waves. Dreams happen here. No movement. Paralyzed. MEMORY AND LEARNING.
NREM
3 Stages: Transitional, between awake and sleep. Deep state of relaxation. Deep sleep/slow wave sleep
Stage 1 NREM
Transition between awake and asleep. ALPHA WAVES. Resembles someone who is relaxed but awake
Theta waves
Easy to wake someone. They may say they weren’t sleeping.
ALPHA WAVES
Resembles someone who is very relaxed yet awake. A part of Stage 1 NREM. Low in frequency, high in amplitude.
Stage 2 NREM
Deep state relaxation. Sleep spindles and K-complex.
THETA WAVES
Seen in stage 1 NREM. Even lower frequencies than alpha, and higher amplitude than alpha.
Sleep spindles
rapid bursts of higher frequncy.
K- Complex
Very high amplitude. Occurs in response to environmental stimuli. Serves as bridge to environmental changes.
Stage 3 NREM
Deep sleep or slow wave sleep. DELTA waves. Heart rates slows. Respiration slows. Difficult to awaken.
DELTA WAVES
Lowest frequency, highest amplitude.
Reticular Activating System
In midbrain. Regulates sleep/wake cycle.
