Chapter 5 - Regulatory Requirements for Direction and Supervision of the Physical Therapist Assistant Flashcards
Give examples of different types of regulations pertaining to PTAs that might appear within a state’s practice act…
⭐️Registration - Least restrictive, used when the risk to the public is generally low. No requiremets for specific training or education
⭐️Certification - Used for higher level of regulation, requires some type of specific education and passing examination
⭐️Licensure - Highest level of oversight, used when the risk to the public is thought to be greatest. In additon to the above, subject to discipline by a state board when regulatory standards are not being met
Describe how regulatory requirements for PTAs may vary from state to state (or within practice settings)…
Each state has its own legal “statutes” that delineate the parameters under which PT services can be delivered. (Refered to as a states PT “practice act”)
Discuss the implications for not abiding by APTA viewpoints…
Members that are found to have violated “standards” could be faced with being barred from future APTA membership.

⭐️Direct Supervision - PT physically present and immediately available for direction and supervision(same facinity). PT will have direct contact with patient/client in 24-hour period. Telecommunication doesn’t meet requirements.
⭐️Direct Personal Supervision - PT or PTA (if allowed by law) is physically present and immediately available to direct and supervise tasks related to patient/client management (continous throughout time tasks are performed). Telecommunication doesn’t meet requirements.
