- free association – instead of hypnosis, Freud wanted clients to talk about what came to mind and analysing these thoughts

Jungian theory?
A
- not reductionist like Freud (id ego superego)
- Jung viewed ppl as positively and focused on individuation
- capacity to move toward wholeness and self-realisation
- explore unconscious and collective unconscious
- therapist assists client to tapping into his inner wisdom
- not just resolution of immediate problems but the transformation of personality.

Using psycho-analytic point-of-view is particularly useful with:

- understanding resistances (cancelling appointments, fleeing from within an appointment)
- understanding that unfinished business can be worked through

Transference & Countertransference
A
The main goal of psychoanalytic therapy is to bring unconscious material into consciousness and enhance the functioning of the ego, helping the individual become less controlled by biological drives or demands of the superego

Limitations?
A
- anonymous role assumed by some therapists. Unduly restrictive.
- length of time for therapy. Freud wanted to see clients 6 times a week and Jung, a max of 2 times.
- severely disturbed clients lack the level of ego strength needed for this treatment
