Chapter 5: Properties and Changes Flashcards
What is mass?
The amount of matter an object has.
What is matter?
Anything that has mass and volume. It makes up the whole universe.
What is volume?
The amount of space an object fills.
What is weight?
The gravitational pull on an object.
What are pure substances?
Matter which contains only one kind of particle. They can be further classified as elements or compounds.
What is an element?
A pure substance that cannot be changed into anything simpler. There are more than 100 elements in the world.
What is a compound?
A pure substance that contains two or more elements in definite proportions. Compounds cannot be separated by physical means. The particles of a compound are all the same but they consist of two or more elements that are chemically joined.
What are mixtures?
Matter which is formed when two or more pure substances are put together but not chemically joined.
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A mixture that is not uniform in its composition. The particles exist in large, visible clumps, and the components can be easily distinguished. (ex. oil and water, rocks in cement)
What is a homogeneous mixture?
A mixture in which the substances are evenly and microscopically mixed together. The particles are separate, but indistinguishable. (ex. soda, air)
What is an alloy?
A homogenous mixture of solids.
What are physical properties?
Properties that you can observe with your senses, measure or calculate. (ex. melting and boiling points, malleability, ductility , density, solubility, conductivity, colour)
What are chemical properties?
Properties that describe the behavior of substance as it changes into a new substance. They are often used to group substances based on common chemical reactions, and include reactions, the rate of reactions, the amount of heat produced, and in what proportions substances react. (ex. corrosion, reaction with acids, and flammability)
What is physical change?
A change in which the substance remains the same before and after the change. It may cause a change in form or state, but not in substance. (ex. cutting a sheet of paper, dissolving salt in water)
What is chemical change?
A change in which a substance transforms into one or more new substances with different properties. It is more likely to be permanent. (ex. burning a candle, burning a marshmallow)
