Chapter 5 - Prions Flashcards
Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies
Can occur sporadically or through transmission
Examples are kuru, CJD, vCJD, BSE, scrapie, chronic wasting disease
Symptoms of TSEs
personality changes, psychiatric problems such as depression, lack of coordination, involuntary jerking, insomnia and memory problems, severe mental impairment
Prion
short of proteinaceous infectious particle
not killed by autoclave
How is BSE controlled in the US?
monitor carcasses, ban use of high-risk tissue
Scrapie
sheep and goats, oldest known and most widespread TSE. transmissed through contact with placenta or associated fluids. There are scrapie resistant genotypes. Not transmissible to humans
BSE
cattle, mad cow disease. vCJD is linked to ingestion of contaminated beef.
risk attitude and risk perception
perceptions reflect interpretation
attitude reflects a consumer general predisposition to risk in a consistant way
KD and KO of PrP in goats and cattle
Production of cattle lacking prion protein
Tested using western blot test (detects specific proteins)
It was successful
tested for level of expression
