Chapter 5 Photosynthesis Flashcards
Area of Photosynthesis
Happens in the chloroplasts in the grana in the thylakoid
Photosynthesis
Light Dependent Reactions and Light Independent Reactions( Calvin Cycle)
Occur in the thylakoids
Light Dependent Reactions
Non Cyclical Phosphorylation
Light excites electron in p680
Water is split to replace the electron and to add more protons into the inside of the thylakoid membrane
Light moves along different proteins to produce ATP
Electron transferred to p700, and in the process gives energy to move more H+ against their concentration gradient
Electron re-excited in the p700 and bounces around to be accepted by NADP+
Cyclical Phosphorylation
Light excites p700 electron
Moves around through the ETC to generate ATP and returns back to the reaction center
Calvin Cycle (Light Independent Reaction)
Where carbon is fixated
Carbon from carbon dioxide is added to RuBP by Rubisco
6RuBP + 6CO2+ 12ATP +6NADPH –> 12 G3P
Photorespiration
Pathway that leads to the fixation of oxygen
causes harmful byproducts
C4
PEP carboxylase combines CO2 with PEP to form oxaloacetate which then converts to malate
Plant use this in hot dry climates allow them to fix carbon when CO2 is greatly limited because they dont have to open their stomata as much
CAM plants
Stomata is closed during the day, but opens during the night so that it can store the CO2 into organic compounds
It then is able to go through the carbon cycle during the day
