Chapter 5- Other Descriptive Statistics Flashcards
Z score
A score expressed in standard deviation units
Standard score
Score expressed in standard deviation units; z is one for example
Outliers
Scores in a distribution that are unusually large or unusually small
An extreme score separated from the others and at least 1.5 x IQR beyond the 25th or 75th percentile
Boxplots
Graph that shows a distribution’s range, interquartile range, skew, median, and sometimes other things
The dot is the mean
The line is the median
The box itself is the IQR
The extended lines are the range
Effect size index
Amount or degree of separation between two distributions
Lowercase d
Is called Cohen’s d
Measures the difference per standard deviation unit
Small effect- 0.2
Medium effect- 0.5
Large effect- 0.8
What is an extreme score?
- More than 2 sd above or below the mean
- A z-score of greater than 2 and less than -2
- Unrealistically large/unrealistically small
