Chapter 5 NFPE Flashcards
Define nutrition focused physical exam
Findings from an evaluation of body systems, muscle and subcutaneous fat wasting, oral health, suck, swallow breath ability, aptetite, and affect
-addresses specific signs and symptoms
Body systems for NFPE
General appearance, vital signs, skin, nails, hair, head, eyes, nose, mouth, neck/chest, abdomen, musculoskeletal
Equipment that may be used
examination gloves, stethlescope, penlight or flashlight, tongue depressor, scales, calipers, tape measure, blood pressure cuff, a watch with a second hand, and a dyanometer to measure hand grip strength
Four basic techniques for NFPE
Inspection
Palpation
Percussion
Auscultation
Describe inspection
General observation that progresses to a more focused observation using the senses of sight, smell, and hearing; note appearance, mood, behavior, movement, facial expressions; most frequently used
Describe palpation
Gentile tactile examination to feel pulsations and vibration; assessment of body structures, including texture, size, temperature, tenderness and mobility
Describe percussion
Assessment of sounds to determine body organ borders, shape, and position; not always used in an NFPE
Describe Auscultation
Use of naked ear or bell or diaphragm of stethlescope to listen to body sounds; not always used (bowel sounds, blood vessels)
Pediatric malnutrition definition
an imbalance between nutrition requirements and dietary intake that results in deficits of energy, protein, and micronutrient stores, resulting in impaired growth and development
Pediatric malnutrition is either related to
an illness or injury, environment, or behavioral factors
Guidelines for assessing malnutrition in adults uses cause-based nomenclature that
reflects current understanding of the role of inflammatory response on the incidence progression and resolution of adult malnutrition
Mild to moderate degree of inflammation signifies
chronic disease or injury-related malnutrition
Marked inflammatory response signifies what malnutrition
acute disease or injury-related malnutrition
Six characteristics of malnutrition
- Interpretation of weight loss for malnutrition by cause
- Interpretation of reduced energy intake for malnutrition by cause
- Loss of body fat
- Loss of muscle
- Fluid accumulation
- Reduced hand grip strength
What can measure strength
hand grip strength with a dynamometer
