Rules for naming binary ionic compounds

A
  1. cation is named first followed by anion.
  2. cation is named for the name of the element.
  3. Anion uses the root name from the element and add -ide to the end.

Type 2- Binary Ionic Compounds

A
  • the compounds contain transition metals that can form two or more different cations.
  • when naming these compounds we have to account for the charge of the cation using Roman numerials.
  • general naming is the same as Type 1 compounds

Q

Type 3 Binary Compounds

A
  • these compounds contain two nonmetals
  • ions are not formed. electrons are shared between the two elements.
  • prefixes are used to indicate the number of atoms of each element.

17
Q

rules for naming type 3 binary compounds

A
  1. first element is named for the name of the element
  2. the second element is named like its a anion.
  3. uses the prefixes to indicate the number of atoms of each element.
  4. the prefix mono- is never used for the first element.
18
Q

Polyatomic ion containing compounds

A
  • these are charged ions made of several elements bound together.
19
Q

writing chemical formulas from compound names

A
  • using the name you need to work backwards to develop the formula
    1. determine whether you have a metal & nonmetal, 2 nonmetals or a metal and a polyatomic ion.
    2. for a metal and nonmetal determine the charges for each ion. from that determine the number of atoms of each element and combine them. the overall charge for the compound should be zero.
