Chapter 5 - Membranes Flashcards
diffusion
A form of passive transport. The movement of particles from a high concentration to a low concentration.
osmosis
The movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane from a low solute concentration to high solute concentration, to dilute the solute.
facilitated diffusion
Movement of a molecule from high to low concentration with the help of a carrier protein.
- is specific - is passive - saturates when all carriers are occupied
active transport
- requires energy – ATP is used directly or indirectly to fuel active transport
- moves substances from low to high concentration (against the concentration gradient)
- requires the use of carrier proteins
