Chapter 5- Meanders And Ox-bow Lakes Flashcards
How do meanders form?
The force of water erodes and undercuts the river bank on the outside of the bend where the water flow has the most energy due to decreased friction. On the inside of the bend, where the river flow is slower, material is deposited as there is more friction.
Where does deposition occur on a meander?
The inside of the bend
Where does erosion occur on a meander?
On the outside of the bend
How do Ox-bow lakes form?
When the river erodes the outside of the bend, the erosion narrows the neck of the meander. Often during a flood, the river will cut through the neck. The river continues in the new bed and the meander is abandoned. When deposition occurs, this seals off the cut-off, forming an ox-bow lake.
